Yacht Club Swing Animated Trailer. 2022
In this trailer, I started with the frames cascading upward in dynamic flow. The irregular shape of each frame adds to the fractured nature of the story. As a bonus, a small sequence of cel animation was added to each page.

What started as an experiment in storytelling, evolved into a three phase project.

Phase 1: Art Book

Can you tell a story without words? Sketched in pencil, then ink over top, each of the 227 pages is directly out of a 8.5x11 sketchbook, drawn (almost completely) in sequence. After designing the book, I self-published and had them printed. Proudly independent, I ship each one from my home in Eastern Oregon.

Phase 2: Novella

Learning from the pictorial experiment of phase 1, yes, you can tell a story without words, but many details of the plot and character development will be left to the imagination of the reader. A big ask. So I began writing, the art book essentially serving as a storyboard for the novella.

Phase 3: Audio

Since the art book already exists, it would require another book to incorporate the novella. With an audiobook, readers could flip through while listening. After recording my first cut of narration, something felt missing: music. Turning to my old Roland synth, the soundtrack was born, adding more instrumentation, guitar, bass, and drums, as I went.

Five years after I began the experiment, Yacht Club Swing was finally complete. A 227 page art book accompanied by a novella and a 4-hour audiobook with music. It’s my largest, most complex project to date.
